Nine Million Deaths a Year From Pollution — Lancet Report

Polluting smoke flying out into the sunset

A new report on global pollution published in The Lancet increases the estimate of deaths due to pollution to 9 million a year or 20 people a minute. Previous estimates had put the number as high as 7 million. Over 85% of pollution comes from burning carbon-based fuels. Such a huge death toll, which also costs the world economy $4-6 trillion per year, is the most urgent reason for the development of fusion energy.
